Nestled within one of Hiné Mizushima’s charming wooden dioramas is a delightful underwater world. Bright blue felt lines the walls, creating a cozy marine environment where a pair of ammonites swim among tall seagrass and vibrant bits of coral reef.
Working from her Vancouver studio, Mizushima brings marine life to life through her whimsical fiber sculptures. Her playful creations often feature underwater creatures with a unique twist—an octopus perched on a human heart or a moray eel emerging from an artery. Crafted from soft felt, her sculptures are adorned with beads and crocheted details, giving them a friendly, almost glamorous appearance. Each piece is a pastel-colored, imaginative version of real-life ocean creatures.
Mizushima’s latest works will be featured in her solo exhibition Creatures and Curiosities, running from September 14 to October 22 at Boris Zakkaten in Tokyo. The show highlights her creative interpretations of marine life, blending artistry and nature in a whimsical display.
