With the demand for more sustainable products growing, more and more companies and organizations are doing their best to find the most eco-friendly solutions. We have been seeing many good improvement around our life and what the organization did in this year’s London Marathon really impressed me.
We all know water is important in the event like marathon. But it will take from 450 to even 1000 years for one plastic bottle to dissolve and in 2018 London Marathon, there were 920,000 plastic bottles used and thrown. The factor makes people start to stop joining the activity and it becomes a big concern quickly. Hence, this year London marathon collaborated with a startup brand called Skipping Rocks Lab, who created edible water pouches called Ooho that are made from seaweed. This groundbreaking creation is especially useful at events like this one because the packaging can be easily eaten since it has absolutely no taste or just thrown away because it is completely biodegradable.
The result is impressive. According to London Marathon, the usage of water bottles have been decreased from 920,000 (in 2018) to 704,000 (in 2019) by giving away these pouches for the runners during their 23rd mile. From my view, if we can start to use such water pouch in event like marathon, it will be a huge improvement on environment protection and less frustrate people with the view of plastic lying everywhere. However, I have no idea of how much such pouch costs and hope its price is acceptable so this technology can be widely used in those events.
