Antonella Positano’s passion for art and architecture began in her childhood, inspired by LEGO creations and drawings of little houses and landscapes. Today, she channels this love into captivating black ink illustrations that highlight the essence of classical architecture.
Her process starts with selecting a subject that resonates with her. “I often feel a connection with my subjects—it’s almost as if they choose me,” Positano explains. Her work focuses on capturing the soul of a structure through dynamic, gestural ink strokes. A fan of Giovan Battista Piranesi, she gravitates toward intricate architectural details with dense textures, translating geometries and shadows into dramatic compositions.
Using high-quality photographs as references, Positano analyzes details and thoughtfully plans each piece. However, her approach remains authentic and intuitive. “I don’t follow references strictly. A direct copy would lack authenticity,” she says. She hopes to incorporate more outdoor sketching, as it allows her to fully immerse herself in the atmosphere of a place.
Despite experimenting with other tools, black ink remains her medium of choice. “The pen’s gestural quality lets me modulate strokes freely. Ink connects past and present, making the artwork timeless and tangible,” Positano explains.
Her choice of canvas depends on her mood. Sketchbooks offer a space for experimentation and reflection, while single sheets of paper allow for precision and control. Regardless of the medium, every piece reflects her journey as an artist.
Positano’s goal is not commercial success but the ability to evoke emotions through her art. “I know I’ve succeeded when I see inspiration in the eyes of those who view my work,” she shares. Her advice for aspiring artists? Focus on your creative process and don’t be deterred by limited resources. “It’s not about expensive tools but understanding your unique artistic voice.”
Through her dynamic black ink art, Antonella Positano continues to inspire, bringing classical architecture to life in ways that are both timeless and deeply personal.
