The fennec fox or fennec is a small nocturnal fox found in the Sahara of North Africa, which is the smallest species of canid in the world. It’s known for its unusually large ears, which serve to dissipate heat. Though smallest out of all the foxes in the world, its ears are the largest relative to body size. The species is classified a “Small wild/exotic canid” by the United States Department of Agriculture, and is considered the only species of fox which can properly be kept as a pet. Because it is so adorable, it is bred commercially as an exotic house pet and beloved by many families.
