A lively cast of creatures—from pigeons and rabbits to alligators and fish—comes to life in Jo Pearson’s (aka Strangford) latest prints. Known for her bold and whimsical style, the artist continues to push her creative boundaries, recently shifting from linoleum to woodblock printing for a more textured, handcrafted look.
A New Approach to Printmaking
While Pearson originally worked with linoleum, she now focuses on woodblock printing, a switch that adds depth and character to her art. “It might seem like a small change, but it makes a big difference to the texture of the print,” she shares. “The more handmade the finished piece looks, the happier I am.”
Exploring Reduction Printing
Strangford also experiments with reduction printing, a technique where she gradually carves away more material from the same block between layers. This process allows her to create intricate details and complex patterns, giving her playful animal prints even more depth and expression.
